How does a Franchise ATOL work?
Under ABTOT’s ATOL Franchise, Members can hold their own ATOL licence and number, while benefiting from ABTOT’s guidance and financial protection expertise. This allows you to meet CAA requirements through a simpler, more supportive process. ideal for small to medium-sized tour operators.
How the process works
- Initial enquiry – Contact ABTOT to discuss your business model and eligibility.
- Financial assessment – You’ll complete ABTOT’s financial risk assessment (instead of the CAA’s). which includes providing financial information for our underwriters to review.
- Indicative terms – If you meet our underwriters’ risk criteria, we will send you a cost indication- outlining costs and conditions.
- Application support – we will provide support to complete our and CAA’s online application forms.
- CAA checks and approval – All applicants complete the CAA’s personal fitness and competence test, and final approval rests with the CAA.
ATOL Franchise Fees
- New ATOL Franchise Members pay a CAA application fee of £942
- Businesses with more than 1,000 passengers or a turnover of £5 million can still join the Franchise but must pay Standard ATOL fees (£2,503 for new applications and £1,570 for renewals).
- ABTOT fees are Membership fee, application fee and bonding costs which will be confirmed in the cost indication.
How the ATOL Franchise differs to other ATOL licences
- ATOL licence is granted on the basis of the applicant meeting ABTOT’s financial criteria not the CAA’s.
- You do not need to appoint an ATOL Reporting Accountant to audit your ATOL reporting if your projections are or less than 1000 passengers and £5m turnover,
- CAA application fees are lower than the Small Business ATOL or Standard ATOL
- Applicants can apply for their ATOL and their non-flight package insolvency protection through ABTOT. As ABTOT operates a govt approved bonding scheme for Travel Organisers to comply with the UK Package Travel Regulations. Saving you time and reducing duplication.
ABTOT’s ATOL Franchise are guaranteed by Travel Bonds and or a Hybrid solution
- A Travel Bond – an insurance-backed guarantee calculated as a percentage of your projected ATOL turnover.
- A Hybrid Solution – combining a bond with a Trust or Escrow Account (in partnership with PT Trustees). This approach segregates customer funds, offers flexibility in paying suppliers, and includes merchant acquirer cover.
In summary, ABTOT’s ATOL Franchise offers a straightforward and supportive route to obtaining and maintaining your ATOL licence. You’ll benefit from expert guidance, a choice of bonding solutions, and a process designed with SME travel organisers in mind.
